Kosovo top source of fighters in Syria, Iraq

Kosovo-Metohija (KiM) is the top source of fighters in conflicts in Syria, Iraq and other Islamic states with 125 fighters per million citizens, and it is followed by Bosnia-Herzegovina with 85 persons, shows a report by the Kosovo Center for Security Studies (KCSS).

According to the Pristina-based daily Koha ditore, the report on Islamic extremism states that the reason why Kosovo citizens go to foreign battlefields is Takfirism, specific extremist ideology which embraces ISIS.

This ideology has settled in the Serbian southern province back in 2005, and it was introduced by Imams from Skopje, who became victims of this ideology while studying in Egypt.

The group of these extremists is not big, but it poses a threat to security in Kosovo, reads the report analyzing the situation in over 20 countries of Europe, USA, Russia and Turkey.

By mid-January this year, a total of 232 fighters left Kosovo to join the most radical groups in Syria and Iraq.
